    Seven Day Menu for a Hyperactive Child

    The seven-day menu which I have devised is based on Doctor Ben Feingold findings that aspirin containing food, preservative, artificial food colourings and flavours lead to hyperactivities in children.

    Aspirin is the name of the drug acetylsalicylic acid and some foods contain salicylates, Doctor Ben Feingold found that by removing foods that contain salicylates from hyperactive (ADHD)children?s diets, their hyperactive (ADHD) condition improved. Foods that contain salicylates are almonds, apples, apricots, blackberries, boysenberries, cherries, cucumbers and pickles, currants, dewberries, gooseberries, grapes and sultanas, nectarines, oranges, peaches, plums and prunes, raspberries, strawberries, tomatoes, tea, soft drinks.

    Doctor Ben Feingold went on to find further that by removing artificial colourings, flavourings and preservatives, that this also help the condition of hyperactive (ADHD) children. This is why I have kept to organic whole foods in my menu.

    Further research has found that children with hyperactivity (ADHD) also lack certain vitamins and minerals especially zinc. It is for this reason that I have tried to provide plenty of whole grains, seafood and legumes in my seven day menu which have high zinc content.

    Artificial sweeteners, especially aspartame have been linked to hyperactivity (ADHD) in children; this is why they are omitted from my seven day menu.

    Many children with hyperactivity (ADHD) also have allergies to certain foods, I have kept dairy and wheat products from the menu just to be on the safe side, as they are common foods that cause allergic reactions. Although meat does not cause any hyperactivity (ADHD) problems I have omitted it from the menu, it contains a lot of chemicals such as antibiotics because of the way that meat is produced. I feel that we can get more beneficial and healthier protein from fish and seafood.

    I tried to keep the menu from repeating itself too much, just to keep it interesting and to avoid having too much of ! one food type which could cause allergy problems later on in life.

    All the food is organic so that no chemicals are consumed and there is plenty of mineral water so that the child is well hydrated.

    In conclusion, if a child has been diagnosed with hyperactivity, ADHD or attention deficit disorder (ADD), this or a diet similar to this is a good drug free way to improve or even cure their condition. It would also be wise to avoid produces that also contain salicylates such as suntan lotion, perfumes, cosmetics, soap and lubrication oils.

    The New Medicine: Medical Care's Increasing Reliance on Technology

    Anyone who's watched ER or any of the other fast-paced medical dramas on TV has seen the actors expertly manipulate all kinds of medical equipment, from intubation tubes to IVs to complex diagnostic equipment. Medicine has seen an enormous transformation, largely due to technological advances.

    One piece of medical equipment making a big impact on diagnosis is the endoscope. A slender, flexible piece of tubing is fitted with an electronic camera assembly with superb optics and inserted into the patient's body, supplying doctors with images of a variety of internal organs and allowing for very accurate diagnoses. Now used routinely as part of a complete physical exam for people over forty, this one piece of equipment is responsible for catching thousands of precancerous and early-stage cancer conditions in the colon alone, saving thousands of lives annually. Other advances include a camera that can be swallowed, taking pictures of the intestinal tract before it is eliminated from the body and retrieved.

    Lasers are another tool coming more into their own in the operating room and, in some cases, in the doctor's office. Ophthalmologists can perform laser surgery on patients' eyes to repair an increasing number of eye conditions and provide more and more people with perfect vision. Laser surgery has also been used to limit damage from diabetic retinopathy, thus saving at least a portion of the affected patient's eyesight. Lasers have been used to perform knee surgery and even brain surgery; in the latter the laser can destroy diseased brain tissue while minimizing the damage to healthy tissue. Plastic surgeons are using lasers now for a number of cosmetic procedures which are faster and less invasive than conventional surgery.

    Another new technology that has entered the medical field is robotics. Mechanical devices have been created, some operated by hand, others by use of a foot pedal, still others operated electronically, which allow incredibly small and precise movements. Lasers used o! n the br ain often have a robotic component, as do endoscopic units.

    Another medical advance has come to public attention with the return of wounded soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan, many of whom have injuries requiring the amputation of arms or legs. Prosthetic devices are increasingly high-tech and high-function, allowing veterans to walk and even run with more natural movement and, with the use of mechanical arms and hands, lift and manipulate objects.

    As amazing as all of these advances are, there are even more to come. Researchers are now working on a computer program which can interact with a person's brain in such a way that the user can move a curser on a computer screen with the energy of thought. Astonishing in itself, just imagine if this new technological development is at the same stage as, say, Pac man was in comparison to the video games available today. Tomorrow's medical developments may bring us treatments and even cures which we can't even comprehend today.

    Muscle Fitness Can Yoga Make You Stronger?

    Many people wonder if yoga can improve their muscle fitness. They recognize that yoga can help reduce stress and increase flexibility, but when it comes to increasing muscle fitness, they think it might be a little too 'weak' to do the job.     A study was conducted at the University of California at Davis. Ten college 'coach potatoes' adopted a yoga routine for eight weeks. Each week, they attended from two to four classes during which they spent 10 minutes on breath control, 15 minutes of warm up exercises, 50 minutes doing yoga asanas, and then 10 minutes of relaxation/mediation. At the end of the eight-week period, the researchers measured the students' fitness and discovered that their muscular strength had increased by up to 31%, their muscular endurance improved by 57%, their flexibility increased by 188%, and their cardio respiratory fitness improved by 7%. These results are pretty amazing when you consider that the study was only conducted for eight weeks.

    Unlike traditional weight building exercises, in yoga your body provides the resistance. While you are not likely going to produce the bulked up muscles of some weight lifters, you will certainly increase your muscle strength.

    Many poses in yoga are done very slowly or you stay in the posture for several breaths. It is much more challenging to your muscles to hold a pose or do it slowly than it is to allow momentum to move you through an action. I have been working out with weights for many years so my muscles are used to being strengthened. Yet, I have practiced certain yoga routines during which my muscles screamed for mercy and I actually had to get out of the pose and then resume it because my muscles were so challenged. I don't often experience this during weight training sessions.

    In addition, some balance postures such as Tree Pose and Shou! lderstan d require enormous muscle control in order to prevent you from falling over. This helps to build and strengthen your muscles.

    In weight training, you isolate a specific muscle as you perform an exercise and this leads to a short, tightened muscle. The muscles you develop during yoga are more likely to be elongated, because while you are strengthening them, you are simultaneously lengthening them. You also do not focus on an isolated muscle, but actively recruit the smaller muscle groups as well. You truly work your entire body when you practice yoga.

    Practicing yoga can help realign your muscles, so they are more balanced. Since you are not overworking any specific muscle group, you are less likely to get injured.

    One of the worst mistakes is never moving past your mistake. Okay, you've been doing great and one day out of nowhere you find yourself wrist deep in one of the biggest burgers you've tasted in a long time. After devouring it, you're riddled with guilt and decide to just give up. Wait just one minute! You've come to far. Get back up and forge ahead. We learn from our mistakes, right? Why should this be any different. I suggest having an off day. Choose one day out of the week to have a reward meal. Now, don't go over board. However, one of your favorite meals is a good way of keeping things exciting and not completely throwing your body into healthy eating SHOCK!

    Living The Life

    Once you've started eating and living healthier the weight will begin to disappear. Again, there will be a multitude of compliments. Who knows. You may even turn a few heads!     Glucosamine Review and Potential Benefits

    Something interesting happened as my triceps workouts continued in their intensity. After doing some triceps elbow extensions and numerous other elbow extension exercises, I began to feel effects of what is known as elbow tendonitis.     Continuing week after week with my new form, the pain was less severe, but it was not a full treatment. Some of the elbow tendonitis symptoms became less painful but the general pain was always present. This has an acute effect on your motivation to continue to do exercises. Doing triceps exercises (dips, skull crushers, one arm and two arm overhead extensions, rope pushdowns) has always been something I look forward to with each arm workout.     Mesothelioma: A Cancer Caused by Asbestos

    The internal organs of the human body are encased in a protective sac called the mesothelium. Examples of mesothelilial membranes are the peritoneum (abdominal organs), pleura (lungs), and pericardium (heart).

    Under specific conditions, the cells of the protective membrane divide uncontrolled and become cancerous. This disease is termed as Mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer which is caused by prolonged exposure to asbestos dust.

    The disease is found to occur among those who work in shipyards, asbestos mines and factories, industries that produce asbestos based products, and the heating and construction businesses. Approximately 3,000 cases occur each year in the US, and most patients are between 50-70 years old. Statistics show that males are commonly affected and among them whites more than African Americans.

    First studied in the late 1700s in depth studies were only done in the 1960s. Tumors of the Mesothelioma can be benign or malignant. The malignant Mesothelioma are categorized into three types:

    ?Epithelioid, accounting for 50-70% of mesotheliomas.

    ?Sarcomatoid, accounting for 7-20%.

    ?Mixed or bi-phasic, accounting for 20-35%.

    When asbestos fibers are breathed into the lungs they travel through large air passages to reach the smaller passages and from them the pleura. In the pleura they damage: the mesothelial cells leading to cancer; lung tissue causing lung cancer; and the development of scar tissue within the lungs known as asbestosis. When asbestos fibers are swallowed they reach the abdominal cavity and cause peritoneal mesothelioma.

    Research reveals that the disease only manifests 20-50 years after being exposed to asbestos dust. The symptoms are not specific to the disease but a patient may develop:

    Fresh Fruit Facials for Healthy Skin

    I was having tea with a friend last week, and we were discussing our extensive skin care regimens. As we were exchanging tips and advice, I realized that I have amassed a virtual recipe box of facials that can be done using fresh fruit.     One of my favorites is the peach facial, which works very well as a tightening mask. Simply take a ripened peach, and remove the skin and the pit from the center. Place the peach and the whites from a single egg in a blender, and whip until smooth. Pat the mixture onto your face, and allow it to sit there for 30 minutes. Rinse with cold water.

    I have found that the apple mask is very good for normal skin. Peel, core, and quarter an apple. Chop the apple in your blender, and add two tablespoons of honey. Blend until smooth. Then remove the mixture from the blender, and refrigerate for approximately 10 minutes. Apply the mixture to your face using a patting motion, and be sure to pat until the honey becomes tacky. Leave it on for about 30 minutes, and rinse with warm water.

    I have also had great success with a Strawberry mask that my Grandmother told me about. The trick here is to use extremely ripe Strawberries. Add approximately ? cup of strawberries and a ? cup of cornstarch to the blender, and mix until smooth. Apply the mixture to your face, and be careful to avoid the area around your eyes. Leave it on for 30 minutes, and rinse it off with cool water.

    The next facial mask is excellent for blemished skin. Chop a ripened tomato into small pieces, and place it in your blender. Add one tablespoon of lemon juice and some instant oatmeal or rolled oats. Mix until it is all combined. Do not mix for too long, as it will not stick to your face. If it gets too thin, simply add more oatmeal. Apply the mixture, and leave it on for 10 minutes. Scrub it off using a warm, wet cloth.

    There are many different ways to ca! re for y our skin, and as many different products on the market. In my experience, the most natural treatments provide the best results.     The Truth About Andro and What You Need To Know Part 1

    On October 8th, 2004 after months of delays and political maneuvering, the US Senate passed Senate Bill 2195 also called the Andro Ban This bill was signed into law by President Bush. This new law made it illegal to manufacture or buy most of the supplements we have all known as andro. As of January 2005, all of these products were deemed illegal for sale or possession.



    What Exactly Is Andro?

    The term andro is a very loose term that was used to describe a large selection of what are known as prohormones or steroid precursors.

    When taken, these products convert into testosterone via an enzymatic pathway in the liver. Elevated levels of testosterone can lead to increased strength and muscle mass.

    The first andro supplement that most people became aware of was Androstene (androstedione). This was the supplement that Mark McGwire had sitting in his locker that pretty much started the whole concern in major league baseball about supplements. After Androstene, another andro product called AndroDiol (androstenediol) became very popular because it was much more anabolic and had fewer side effects.

    As the supplement industry progressed, these prohormones became more and more potent to where they were basically legal steroids.

    While there were many brands and different compounds, most guys still referred to all of these prohormones as andro.

    What Did This New Law Do To Andro?

    When the new law was signed by President Bush, it basically made all prohormones illegal. Items such as Andro Poppers, Nor-Andro, 1-AD, Methyl 1-Test (M1T) and others were banned and all of the companies who made these andro items stopped production.

    But I've Seen Supplements Being Sold That Still Sound Like Andro

    True. Shortly after the President signed the law into effect, most of the companies who made these products quickly started to develop new products that were legal. The law listed many ingredients that were declared illegal so the manufacture! rs simpl y found new ingredients that were not on the list



    Some of these products became even more potent and anabolic than the items that were banned! However, once again the FDA declared these new products illegal and they too have been discontinued. Items like Superdrol, Methyl 1-P and Masterdrol are also out of stock and no longer sold by almost everyone.


    Okay, So What Is Left To Take That Will Help Me Get Bigger?



    At this time there are currently a very few items that would be considered andro that are still legal. These will also probably be banned as well in the near future and are all in very limited supply. Items such as Methyl 1-Alpha, Methyl 1-D and Phera-Plex are all fairly anabolic supplements that many online retailers still have limited amounts of however many of these items have already been discontinued by their respective manufacturers so supplies are limited virtually everywhere.

    Cholesterol Gallstones

    Peripheral Neuropathy

    Peripheral neuropathy refers to damage to the peripheral nervous system, which carries all messages to the brain. Peripheral nerves, when damaged, cannot carry, or carry distorted messages, to the brain from the extremities.

    Help for Wrinkles

    Wrinkles are actually caused by changes that take place in the dermis, which is the lower layer of skin.     Is Your Child Lazy Or Is It ADHD?

    Having grown up with undiagnosed Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), I know how it feels to be labeled lazy when you're really just fighting ADHD and doing the best you can to fit your ADHD square peg into the round hole of life.

    I remember, as an ADD child, deciding I wouldn't write my spelling words five times. I just didn't want to do it. To a kid with ADHD, that kind of work is just torture, and I quit doing it.

    I remember that ADHD experience because I failed sixth grade spelling, though I went to the spelling bee as champion for my class.

    I remember how painful it was when my parents, who'd never heard of ADHD, called me lazy--and meant it

    I know how it feels to be the kid with ADHD.

    But I accused my ADHD son of laziness recently for not doing his work at school. Even though I know about ADHD. Even though I know what it's like. I forgot.

    How much harder it must be for parents who don't understand ADHD and don't know what to do about their child's learning problems.

    What I want to say to all parents is this:

    You know your child. You know whether he's being lazy or really struggling. You may not know why. You may not have an ADHD diagnosis to fall back on. You may not be an expert on ADHD or parenting. But you know your kid and you love him.

    Remember that, and seek out people who do know and who can help.

    It's frustrating and even infuriating to see a kid we know is bright not living up to his potential. But think about how frustrating it must be to the child, to know he's doing everything he knows how to do and just isn't making it.

    So think about that the next time your child seems to be slacking off, and investigate whether there might be something going on related to his ADHD, if he's been diagnosed, or whether he might have ADHD, if he hasn't, and whether you should talk to a qualified professional about your son's difficulties.

    Nature Healing Method for Acne

    The treatment of acne by the administration of salve or ointment does not serve any purpose. They only suppress the action of the sebaceous glands temporarily. In nature cure, the main emphasis is on diet and certain water applications.

    To begin with the patient should resort to all fruit diet for about a week. In this regimen, there should be three meals a day, consisting of fresh juicy fruits, such as apples, pears, grapes, grape-fruit, pineapple and peaches. Citrus fruits, bananas, dried, stewed or tinned fruits should not be taken. Unsweetened lemon or plain water, either hot or cold, should be drunk and nothing else. During this period, warm -water enema should be taken daily to cleanse the bowels and all other measures adopted to eradicate constipation.

    After a week of all fruit diet, the patient can gradually adopt a well-balanced diet. Emphasis should be on raw foods, especially fresh fruits and vegetables, sprouted seeds, raw nuts and whole grain cereals, especially millet and brown rice. Further shorter periods on the all-fruits for three days, or so may be necessary at a monthly interval till the condition of the skin improves. Strict attention to diet is essential for recovery. Starchy, protein and fatty foods, should be restricted. Meats, sugar, strong tea or coffee, condiments, pickles, refined and processed foods should all be avoided, as also soft drinks, candies, ice cream and products made with sugar and white flour.

    Two vitamins, namely, niacin and vitamin A have been used successfully to treat acne. The vitamin therapy which may comprise a niacin, 100 mg. three times daily and vitamin A in large doses upto 1,50,000 units per day should not exceed one month. Vitamin E is also vitally important to prevent scarring from acne and in removing old scars. Another effective remedy in the realm of nutrition that seems to offer new promise of help for acne is zinc. It has shown dramatic results in some cases. Zinc should be taken in therapeutic doses of 50 mg. three times a! day. Af ter noticeable improvement it can be gradually reduced.

    Local Treatment

    As regards local treatment, hot fomentation should be applied to open up the pores and squeeze the waste matter. Then rinse with cold water. Sun and air baths by exposing the whole body to sun and air are highly beneficial. The healing packs made of grated cucumber, oatmeal cooked in milk, and cooked, creamed carrots used externally, have been found to be effective.

    The orange peel is valuable in the treatment of acne. The peel, pounded well with water on a piece of stone, should be applied to the affected areas. The lemon has also proved beneficial in removing pimples and acne . It should be applied regularly. A teaspoonful of coriander juice, mixed with a pinch of turmeric powder, is another effective home remedy for pimples and blackheads. The mixture should be applied to the face after thoroughly washing it, every night before retiring.

    The juice of raw potatoes has also proved very valuable in clearing skin blemishes. This cleansing results from high content of potassium sulphur, phosphorous and chlorine in the potato. These elements are, however, of value only when the potato is raw as in this state they are composed of live organic atoms.

    A hot Epsom-salt bath twice a week will be highly beneficial in all cases of acne. This bath is prepared by adding one and a half kg. of Epsom -salt to 50 litres of water having a temperature of about 100 o F. The patient should remain in the bath from 25 to 35minutes till he perspires freely. After the bath the patient should cool off gradually.

    Posture Commands: Why They Don't Work

    It is as reasonable to expect a fire to go out when it is ordered to stop burning as to suppose that a man can stand straight in consequence of a direct action of thought and desire. - Professor John Dewey

    John Dewey is best known as a philosopher and the leading voice of the school of philosophy known as pragmatism, and for his profound influence on public education in the United States. Indeed, he is often called the ?father of American education?.

    Why on earth was he writing about posture, of all things? Philosophers, we usually assume, are concerned with ideas, not physical training.

    And just why can?t you stand straight by a ?direct action of thought and desire?? Isn?t that what your parents and teachers - especially your physical education teachers - told you over and over when you were growing up? And isn?t that what countless advice articles advise to prevent back pain, for example when using a computer?

    What other way is there?

    In order to answer these questions, we need to look at a remarkable association between Dewey and another great twentieth century thinker- F. Matthias Alexander. Alexander was an Australian who developed an educational method that today is called ?The Alexander Technique? and is widely used by people wanting to learn how to release harmful tension from their bodies.

    The two men met in New York during World War I when Dewey had a series of lessons with Alexander. These lessons had a profound impact on him. They showed him how to stop and think before acting. He also credited them with enabling him to hold a philosophical position calmly, or to change it if new evidence was presented to him.

    They also helped him improve his own posture, coordination, breathing and eyesight. It?s fair to say that Dewey?s experiences with Alexander opened new ways for him to look at the world, at himself and his approach to philosophy and the world of ideas.

    Their association lasted until Alexander?s death in 1955. Dewey wrote the! introdu ctions to three of Alexander?s books and he referred to Alexander many times in his writings. In a chapter titled ?Habits of Will? in Human Nature and Conduct, published a few years after his first lessons with Alexander, he explained in detail why direct approaches to achieving good posture - admonitions to ?stand up straight? and the like - are doomed to failure.

    Dewey tended to be a little on the wordy side, so I?ve lightly edited his writing to make it more accessible. Here is part of what he wrote:

    ?A man who has a bad habitual posture tells himself, or is told, to stand up straight. If he is interested and responds, he braces himself, goes through certain movements, and it is assumed that the desired result is substantially attained; and that the position is retained at least as long as the man keeps the idea or order in mind.

    ?Consider the assumptions which are here made. It is implied that the means ...(to do so)... exist independently of established habit and even that they may be set in motion in opposition to habit...

    ?Now in fact a man who can stand properly does so, and only a man who can does. In the former case, fiats of will are unnecessary, and in the latter useless. A man who does not stand properly forms a habit of standing improperly, a positive, forceful habit.

    ?The common implication that his mistake is merely negative, that he is simply failing to do the right thing, and that the failure can be made good by an order of will is absurd. One might just as well suppose that the man who is a slave of whiskey-drinking is merely one who fails to drink water.

    ?Conditions have been formed for producing a bad result, and the bad result will occur as long as those conditions exist. They can no more be dismissed by a direct effort of will than the conditions which create drought can be dispelled by whistling for wind. It is as reasonable to expect a fire to go out when it is ordered to stop burning as to suppose that a man can stand straight in consequence ! of a dir ect action of thought and desire. The fire can be put out only by changing objective conditions; it is the same with rectification of bad posture.

    ?Of course, something happens when a man acts upon his idea of standing straight. For a little while, he stands differently, but only a different kind of badly. He then takes the unaccustomed feeling which accompanies his unusual stance as evidence that he is now standing straight. But there are many ways of standing badly, and he has simply shifted his usual way to a compensatory bad way at some opposite extreme.?

    From Dewey?s experience, the solution was to be found in Alexander?s indirect approach. It does not rely on the student simply wanting to have better posture. His method was to carefully identify the underlying causes of a student?s poor posture, and then show the student how to release them.

    If, for example, a student is a typical ?slumper? or ?sloucher?, pulling his or her shoulders forward and down into the chest, Alexander (and, today, teachers of the Alexander Technique) would show the student how to stop producing those downward and inward pulls so that their body expands to its full size.

    Students learn how to ?get out of the way? of what happens naturally. An Alexander Technique teacher will never ask you to ?straighten up? as that produces the useless rearrangement of tensions Dewey so well described.

    This approach has proved itself over the years and today the Technique is regarded by many as the most effective way to improve posture - and the overall quality of physical functioning.
